Your refrigerator runs continuously, 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. When it stops working properly, food spoils rapidly, household routines collapse, and the pressure to get it fixed immediately is real. Arnotec Appliance Repairs has been handling refrigerator faults across Cape Town’s Southern Suburbs for 11 years. Our certified technicians carry genuine OEM parts for all major brands, diagnose faults accurately the first time, and complete most repairs in a single visit backed by a 6-month workmanship warranty.

Signs Your Refrigerator Needs Repair

Refrigerator faults rarely appear without warning. Acting on early signs prevents food loss and limits the cost of the repair.

Fridge not reaching set temperature: If your fridge feels warmer than usual or food is spoiling faster than expected, the most common causes are a thermostat fault, a dirty or blocked condenser coil, a failed evaporator fan motor, or a compressor issue. Each of these presents with slightly different additional symptoms that our technicians identify during the diagnostic visit.

Compressor clicking but not starting: A clicking sound from the compressor area that repeats every few minutes, with the fridge never achieving temperature, is almost always a failed start relay or overload protector. This fault is extremely common following load shedding events in Cape Town and is repairable in most cases in a single visit.

Fridge running constantly without cycling off: A refrigerator that runs continuously indicates the cooling system cannot achieve or maintain the set temperature. Causes include a thermostat fault, a refrigerant shortage, a blocked airflow path, or condenser coil contamination. Continuous running accelerates compressor wear if left unaddressed.

Frost build-up on the back wall of the fridge compartment: Frost forming on the rear interior wall of the refrigerator section — rather than the freezer — indicates a defrost system fault. This is typically a failed defrost heater, defrost thermostat, or defrost timer. Left unaddressed, the frost accumulation restricts airflow and causes the fridge to gradually lose its ability to maintain temperature.

Water pooling inside the fridge or underneath it: Water pooling inside the fridge is almost always a blocked defrost drain. Water under the fridge can be a drain pan overflow or a water dispenser connection issue on models with water and ice dispensers.

Unusual sounds from the fridge: A normal refrigerator makes a low hum during compressor operation. A rattling sound often indicates a loose component on the condenser or evaporator fan. A loud clicking that repeats regularly points to a compressor start relay fault. A high-pitched whine or grinding from the back of the fridge suggests a fan motor bearing failure.

Fridge warm but freezer working normally: When the freezer maintains temperature but the fridge compartment is warm, the most common causes are a failed evaporator fan motor in the fridge section, a blocked airflow path, or a failed damper control. These are all repairable faults that do not require compressor replacement.

Excessive electricity consumption: A fridge that runs more than usual — evidenced by a higher electricity bill or a fridge that is noticeably warmer on its exterior sides — may have a failing door seal, a blocked condenser coil, or a thermostat running the compressor beyond what is necessary to maintain temperature.

Our Refrigerator Repair Services

We repair all refrigerator configurations including single-door bar fridges, upright freestanding fridges, double-door combination fridge-freezers, side-by-side fridge-freezers, French door models, American-style models with water and ice dispensers, and under-counter bar fridges.

Common repairs we carry out include:

Compressor start relay and overload protector replacement: The start relay is a small component that provides the electrical kick that starts the compressor. When it fails, the compressor attempts to start repeatedly, producing the characteristic clicking sound. Surge damage from load shedding is the leading cause of start relay failure across the Southern Suburbs. Replacement is a single-visit repair in almost all cases.

Thermostat and temperature control replacement: A faulty thermostat causes the fridge to either run too cold — freezing contents in the fridge compartment — or too warm, failing to maintain a safe storage temperature. We test and replace thermostats on all fridge models.

Evaporator and condenser fan motor replacement: Fans circulate air across the cooling coils and through the fridge and freezer compartments. A failed fan motor causes temperature imbalances and, in fridge-freezer combinations, often presents as a fridge that is warm while the freezer remains cold.

Defrost system repair: The defrost system — comprising a defrost heater, defrost thermostat, and defrost timer or control — periodically melts frost accumulation from the evaporator coil. When any component of this system fails, frost builds up, restricts airflow, and progressively reduces the fridge’s cooling capacity. We diagnose and replace the specific failed component.

Door seal replacement: A worn or perished door seal allows warm air to enter the fridge constantly, forcing the compressor to run more than normal and increasing electricity consumption. We supply and fit replacement door seals for all major fridge models.

Electronic control board repair and replacement: Surge-damaged control boards are one of the most common refrigerator faults following load shedding events in Cape Town. A failed control board typically presents as a fridge that is completely dead, or one that runs erratically with the display showing fault codes. We diagnose and replace boards for all major brands.

Defrost drain clearing: A blocked defrost drain causes water to pool in the bottom of the fridge compartment. We clear the drain using hot water and a flexible tool, and check the drain heater where fitted.

Refrigerator Repairs for Cape Town Homes

Load shedding power surges are the single most common cause of refrigerator compressor and control board failures across the Southern Suburbs. The voltage spike that occurs on power restoration when load shedding ends is particularly harmful to compressor start components and electronic control systems. If your fridge was working normally before a load shedding event and has stopped functioning or started behaving abnormally since, a surge-related fault is the most likely cause and is repairable in the majority of cases.

Coastal suburbs including Muizenberg, Tokai, and Westlake experience elevated ambient humidity and salt-laden air that accelerates corrosion on condenser coil fins and electrical connections inside the fridge. This is particularly relevant for older fridges without sealed external condenser coils. We check for corrosion-related damage as part of every diagnostic visit in coastal areas of the Southern Suburbs.

We service all residential and light commercial refrigerators across Constantia, Rondebosch, Claremont, Wynberg, Plumstead, Bergvliet, Tokai, Westlake, and Muizenberg with immediate response times and same-day and next-day appointment availability, Monday to Saturday, 08:00 to 17:30.

What We Fix

Refrigerator Fault Types We Repair

Compressor Start Relay Replacement

The most common single repair following load shedding surge events. The fridge clicks but won’t start. Replaced in a single visit in almost all cases using genuine OEM relays.

Thermostat and Temperature Control

Incorrect temperature — too cold or too warm — diagnosed and corrected by replacing the faulty thermostat or temperature control board. All fridge models covered.

Fan Motor Replacement

Evaporator and condenser fan motors replaced on all fridge types. A failed fan motor is a common cause of temperature imbalances between the fridge and freezer compartments.

Defrost System Repair

Defrost heaters, defrost thermostats, and defrost timers diagnosed and replaced. Frost build-up on the back wall of the fridge is the classic sign of a defrost system fault.

Door Seal Replacement

Perished or poorly fitting door seals replaced for all fridge and fridge-freezer models. A failed door seal causes the compressor to overwork and increases electricity consumption.

Electronic Control Board Replacement

Surge-damaged control boards replaced for all major brands. A completely dead fridge or one showing persistent fault codes following a power event is almost always a board fault.

Defrost Drain Clearing

Blocked defrost drains cleared quickly. Water pooling in the bottom of the fridge compartment is almost always a drain blockage, not a sealed system fault.

Water and Ice Dispenser Repair

Water inlet valves, dispenser solenoids, and ice maker faults repaired on American-style and French door fridge-freezers with built-in water and ice dispensers.

FAQ

Refrigerator Repair Questions

My fridge is clicking but not starting — what is wrong?

This is almost certainly a failed compressor start relay or overload protector. It is one of the most common refrigerator faults we see across the Southern Suburbs, and it is extremely common following load shedding events. The fridge clicks because the compressor is trying and failing to start. The repair is a single-visit job in most cases. Call-out fee R400.

My fridge developed a fault after load shedding — is it repairable?

Yes, in the majority of cases. Load shedding power surges damage start relays and electronic control boards more commonly than any other cause of fridge failure across Cape Town. If your fridge was working before the load shedding event and stopped functioning after, a repairable surge-related fault is the most likely explanation. We diagnose accurately and advise before quoting.

My fridge is running constantly but not cooling properly — what does that mean?

A fridge running continuously without achieving set temperature typically indicates a failing thermostat, a refrigerant shortage, a blocked or dirty condenser coil, or a failing compressor. Continuous running puts extra wear on the compressor and should be investigated promptly. Condenser coil issues, particularly corrosion-related in coastal areas, are especially common in Muizenberg, Tokai, and Westlake.

My fridge is cold but the freezer compartment is warm — what is the cause?

When the fridge is cold but the freezer is warm (or vice versa in a fridge-freezer), the most likely causes are a failed evaporator fan motor in the affected compartment, a blocked airflow path caused by frost accumulation, or a failed damper control. These are repairable faults and do not require compressor replacement in most cases.

There is water pooling inside the bottom of my fridge — what is causing it?

Water pooling inside the fridge compartment is almost always a blocked defrost drain. During the defrost cycle, meltwater drains through a channel in the back of the fridge interior to a drain pan beneath the compressor. When this drain blocks, water accumulates inside instead. This is a quick, inexpensive repair.

Is it worth repairing an older fridge?

It depends on the age, brand, and nature of the fault. A start relay replacement, thermostat fault, or door seal replacement on a solid-bodied fridge is almost always worth doing. If the compressor itself has seized and the fridge is more than 10 years old, or if the sealed refrigerant system has a major leak, we will give you an honest assessment and recommendation before doing any work. We will not proceed with a repair that does not make financial sense for you.

What is the call-out fee and what does it cover?

Our flat call-out fee is R400. This covers the technician’s visit and a full fault diagnosis. After diagnosis we provide a clear, itemised repair quote. There is no obligation to proceed. If you approve the repair, we carry it out in the same visit using genuine OEM parts wherever available.
