Certified Installers Same-Day Commissioning 6-Month Workmanship Warranty All Major Brands

The quality of your aircon installation determines how efficiently the unit runs, how quietly it operates, how long it lasts before needing its first repair, and whether your manufacturer warranty remains valid. A system that is incorrectly sized, poorly piped, or inadequately charged will underperform from day one and is likely to develop faults significantly earlier than a correctly installed equivalent unit. Arnotec provides certified aircon installation across the Cape Town Southern Suburbs, from site assessment and unit selection advice through to same-day commissioning and testing, backed by a 6-month workmanship warranty.

Why Correct Installation Matters

Correct sizing prevents the most common installation mistakes: An undersized unit runs continuously, struggling to reach set temperature on warm Cape Town days and nights. Continuous operation accelerates compressor wear and significantly shortens the unit’s working life. An oversized unit in a small room short-cycles — it reaches the set temperature quickly, shuts off, and then restarts repeatedly. Short-cycling prevents the system from completing its dehumidification cycle properly, resulting in a room that is cold but damp. It also puts excessive mechanical stress on the compressor at startup.

Pipe routing affects efficiency and reliability: Refrigerant pipe runs must be correctly sloped and supported to allow refrigerant oil to return to the compressor. Pipes with incorrect gradients cause oil pooling, which reduces lubrication of the compressor bearings and accelerates wear. Pipe joints must be properly brazed and pressure-tested. Inadequately sealed joints cause refrigerant leaks that develop slowly, progressively reducing the unit’s cooling capacity over months rather than appearing as a sudden failure.

Correct refrigerant charge is critical: Aircon systems are precision-charged with a specific quantity of refrigerant. Overcharging causes high discharge pressure and compressor damage. Undercharging reduces cooling efficiency and causes the evaporator to ice up. Only a certified technician with the correct equipment can measure and set the correct refrigerant charge. A system that is incorrectly charged will never perform to specification regardless of how good the unit itself is.

Electrical connections determine safety and reliability: The outdoor and indoor units must be connected with correctly rated cabling and protected by appropriately rated circuit breakers. Undersized cabling causes voltage drop under load, reduces compressor performance, and creates a fire risk over time. Incorrectly rated protection means the system may not trip under fault conditions.

Manufacturer warranty protection: Most major aircon brands, including Daikin, Midea, LG, Samsung, Carrier, Gree, and Hisense, specify that their equipment must be installed by a certified technician for the manufacturer warranty to remain valid. An installation carried out by an uncertified installer, however well-intentioned, voids the manufacturer warranty from the first day of operation.

Aircon System Types We Install

Wall-mounted split systems are the most common residential aircon type across Cape Town. A single indoor unit is mounted high on the interior wall, connected by refrigerant pipe through the wall to an outdoor condenser unit. We install single and multi-room split systems across all major brands, handling all pipe routing, drainage, and electrical connections in a clean, concealed route where the property allows.

Multi-split systems use a single outdoor unit connected to multiple indoor units in different rooms. This configuration reduces the number of outdoor units required for multi-room conditioning and is a good choice for Constantia and Westlake estate properties where aesthetic impact on facades is a consideration. We size the outdoor unit correctly for the combined load of all indoor units, a calculation that requires proper assessment rather than simple addition.

Cassette units are ceiling-mounted and distribute conditioned air in four directions simultaneously, making them effective in open-plan living areas, commercial spaces, and rooms where wall mounting is not practical. Cassette installation requires ceiling access for pipe routing and is more complex than wall-mount installation. We handle full cassette installation including ceiling cutout, mounting frame, and plenum connection.

Portable and window units are less common in new Cape Town installations but we assist with correct positioning and basic installation setup for portable units where a permanent split system is not viable.

All installations are part of our broader Aircon Services offering across Cape Town.

How We Size Your Aircon Correctly

Correct aircon sizing is a calculation, not a guess. The required cooling capacity in BTU (British Thermal Units) per hour depends on several factors that we assess during the site visit:

Floor area is the starting point but not the only factor. A common mistake is to select an aircon based on floor area alone without accounting for ceiling height, which directly affects the volume of air that needs to be conditioned.

Ceiling height — rooms with high ceilings require proportionally more cooling capacity than the floor area alone suggests. Many older Cape Town properties, particularly in Rondebosch, Claremont, and Wynberg, have 3-metre or higher ceilings that significantly affect the required unit size.

Insulation and construction — a well-insulated modern home in Westlake retains conditioned air significantly better than an older, poorly insulated property of the same floor area. Concrete walls, double glazing, and ceiling insulation all reduce the required cooling load.

Window area and orientation — large north or west-facing windows receive direct afternoon sun that substantially increases the cooling load in a room during the hottest part of the day. We calculate the solar heat gain contribution from windows as part of the sizing assessment.

Room occupancy and heat-generating equipment — a home office with multiple screens and computers, or a kitchen, generates significantly more internal heat than a bedroom. We account for heat sources in the sizing calculation.

We provide a clear recommendation and explain the reasoning before you commit to purchasing a unit.

Aircon Installation in Cape Town’s Southern Suburbs

Cape Town’s Southern Suburbs present specific installation considerations that differ from inland regions of South Africa.

Coastal salt air in Muizenberg, Tokai, and Westlake requires careful outdoor unit positioning. Outdoor condenser units facing directly into False Bay wind should, where the property allows, be positioned on a sheltered wall to reduce direct salt aerosol exposure. We advise on positioning as part of the site assessment for all coastal area installations. We also recommend coated or stainless steel condenser fin units for properties with high salt air exposure, as standard aluminium fins corrode faster in a coastal environment.

Load shedding and backup power is a relevant consideration for all Cape Town installations. Inverter aircon units — which ramp compressor speed up and down based on demand rather than running at full power — are significantly more efficient than fixed-speed units and work better with backup power systems because of their lower startup current draw. We can advise on inverter-compatible unit selection and position outdoor units to facilitate backup power connection where requested.

Summer heat patterns in the Southern Suburbs favour west and south-west exposures for outdoor units, away from direct afternoon sun which raises the ambient temperature around the condenser and reduces cooling efficiency. We position outdoor units to minimise ambient heat gain where the property layout allows.

We install across Constantia, Rondebosch, Claremont, Wynberg, Plumstead, Bergvliet, Tokai, Westlake, and Muizenberg, Monday to Saturday, 08:00 to 17:30.

Installation Day

Our certified technician arrives on the scheduled day and carries out the full installation — mounting the indoor unit, positioning the outdoor unit, running the refrigerant pipe and drain line, completing all electrical connections, and pressure-testing the pipe run before charging with refrigerant. We work cleanly and protect flooring and furniture during the installation process. Standard single split-system installations take 3 to 5 hours.

5

Commissioning and Testing

Once the installation is complete, we commission the unit — verifying the refrigerant charge, testing all operational modes (cooling, heating, fan, dehumidification), checking the remote control and any app connectivity functions, and measuring the airflow output from the indoor unit. We walk you through the controls and settings before leaving.

6

Warranty and Documentation

We issue the 6-month workmanship warranty on the installation. We also provide or assist with the manufacturer warranty registration where required. If the unit develops a fault within the warranty period that is related to the installation, we return to rectify it at no additional cost.

Aircon Capacity Reference — Cape Town Homes

This table provides general guidance only. A proper site assessment accounting for ceiling height, insulation, window exposure, and heat sources is always required for an accurate recommendation.

Room Size Typical Capacity Common Application Notes for Cape Town
Up to 15 m² 9 000 BTU (0.75 kW) Small bedroom, study Suitable for insulated rooms with limited sun exposure. Increase to 12 000 BTU for north-facing rooms or older construction.
15 – 20 m² 12 000 BTU (1.0 kW) Standard bedroom, home office Most common residential installation size. Verify ceiling height — rooms above 2.7 m may require 18 000 BTU.
20 – 30 m² 18 000 BTU (1.5 kW) Large bedroom, lounge, dining room West-facing rooms in the Southern Suburbs often require the upper end of this range due to afternoon sun load.
30 – 45 m² 24 000 BTU (2.0 kW) Open-plan living area, large lounge Open-plan areas with kitchen connectivity require assessment of the cooking heat load in addition to solar gain.
45 – 60 m² 30 000 BTU (2.5 kW) Large open-plan, commercial space Consider a multi-split system with two indoor units for better air distribution in long or irregular-shaped rooms.
60 m² + 36 000 BTU + or multi-unit Very large open-plan, office, retail Requires detailed load calculation. Multi-split or cassette system is often more appropriate than a single wall-mount unit.

FAQ

Aircon Installation Questions

How do I know what size aircon I need for my room?

Correct sizing requires a proper assessment of the room’s floor area, ceiling height, insulation level, window area and orientation, and internal heat sources. Using floor area alone to select a unit is the most common cause of an incorrectly sized installation. We carry out a full assessment before recommending a unit, and we explain the reasoning behind the recommended capacity before you commit to a purchase.

Does incorrect installation void my manufacturer warranty?

Yes. All major aircon brands — including Daikin, Midea, LG, Samsung, Carrier, Gree, and Hisense — specify that equipment must be installed by a certified technician for the manufacturer warranty to remain valid. An installation by an uncertified person voids the warranty from day one, leaving you unprotected if the unit develops a fault.

How long does aircon installation take?

A standard single wall-mounted split system installation typically takes 3 to 5 hours. We commission and test the unit on the same day. Multi-room or multi-split installations take proportionally longer. We give you a specific time estimate during the quote process based on your property’s pipe routing requirements.

Can I supply my own aircon unit and just use you for installation?

Yes. We can install a unit you have already purchased, provided it is an appropriate brand and the correct size for the space. We will assess the unit before installation and advise if there are any concerns about the sizing or suitability. If the unit is incorrectly sized, we will tell you before installing it rather than after.

What is the best aircon for Cape Town’s coastal areas like Muizenberg and Tokai?

For coastal properties with high salt air exposure, we recommend units with coated or hydrophilic aluminium condenser fins, or models with corrosion-resistant stainless steel basepans. Brands like Daikin and Midea offer specific coastal variants. We advise on appropriate unit selection during the site assessment and can source units with coastal-appropriate specifications on request.

Should I choose an inverter aircon or a fixed-speed unit?

For residential use in Cape Town, we recommend inverter units in almost all cases. Inverter compressors ramp speed up and down based on demand, using significantly less electricity than fixed-speed units that run at full power or not at all. Inverter units also maintain a more consistent temperature and are better suited to use with backup power systems due to their lower startup current draw — a relevant consideration in a load-shedding environment.

What warranty do I get on the installation?

Every installation carries a 6-month workmanship warranty covering the pipe work, electrical connections, drainage setup, and unit mounting. This is separate from and in addition to the manufacturer warranty on the aircon unit itself. If any fault develops that is attributable to the installation within the warranty period, we return and rectify it at no additional cost.
